The purpose of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is the development of viable urban communities by providing decent housing, suitable living environments, and expanded economic opportunities; principally for persons of low and moderate income. Activities funded under the CDBG program must meet one of three national objectives:
- Benefit to low and moderate income persons
- Aid in the prevention of slum and blight
- Meet an urgent need
Eligible activities under the CDBG program may include housing activities (such as acquisition, rehabilitation, or new construction); other real property activities (such as clearance and demolition; code enforcement; or rehabilitation of commercial buildings; public facility activities (such as community centers or neighborhood parks); public service activities (such as youth services, senior services, or childcare); economic development activities (such as microenterprise assistance or commercial rehabilitation); assistance to community based development organizations; and planning and administrative activities.
