Block Grant Programs

The purpose of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is the development of viable urban communities by providing decent housing, suitable living environments, and expanded economic opportunities; principally for persons of low and moderate income. Activities funded under the CDBG program must meet one of three national objectives:

  • Benefit to low and moderate income persons
  • Aid in the prevention of slum and blight
  • Meet an urgent need

Eligible activities under the CDBG program may include housing activities (such as acquisition, rehabilitation, or new construction); other real property activities (such as clearance and demolition; code enforcement; or rehabilitation of commercial buildings; public facility activities (such as community centers or neighborhood parks); public service activities (such as youth services, senior services, or childcare); economic development activities (such as microenterprise assistance or commercial rehabilitation); assistance to community based development organizations; and planning and administrative activities.
